9/11 Cancer Fund OKs $804 Million in Payments

The Special Master of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (sometimes called the 911 Cancer Fund) announced this week that over $804 million in compensation has been authorized to over 3,000 claimants. The Special Master, Sheila Birnbaum, was picked to help administer the 9/11 fund established by the Zadroga Act.  The 911 Cancer Fund gives money awards to individuals who have suffered from cancer and other conditions due to heavy exposure to toxic dust and smoking debris in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

Ms. Birnbaum noted that the fund had “increased the compensation determinations by a factor of 10” in the year 2014–a very encouraging number for hundreds of responders and survivors suffering from 911 related cancers and other conditions awaiting compensation. Recent fund statistics have noted that over 9,000 claimants have been found eligible for compensation as of January 2015.

The deadline to submit all claims is October 2016, but many 911 Cancer Fund lawyers and advocates hope that there will be a re-authorization of the Zadroga Act, which not only provides compensation but also treatment of 9/11-related cancers and conditions through the World Trade Center Health Program.
