“Dust Lady” Dies From 9/11 Related Cancer
Marcy Borders, the subject of a famous photograph taken right after the collapse of the first WTC tower, has died from a 9/11 related cancer. She was 42 years old.
Marcy’s story is heartbreakingly common. An office worker in one of the towers on the morning of 9/11 she fled the building and was caught in the huge dust cloud that engulfed Lower Manhattan after the first tower collapsed. The dust cloud from the first collapse contained over 2,500 contaminants, not to mention a great deal of smoke and ash. Years later, Marcy discovered that she had stomach cancer and underwent chemotherapy, she told the Jersey Journal during an interview. In the interview, Marcy captured the feelings of so many people who were exposed to 9/11 dust and smoke: “How do you go from being healthy to waking up the next day with cancer?” Marcy died on Monday, August 24th, from the stomach cancer.
